Although Apple is set to launch a new series of iPhone’s in the fall of 2020, there is a lot of industry speculation about whether or not consumers will bite.
Between financial tensions and the discomfort of learning new technology, many iPhone lovers may stick with older models rather than jumping on the bandwagon.
While this might spell trouble for Apple, it’s great news for anyone who wants to know how to sell an iPhone.
If you’re one of the people who’s looking to profit off of your older model, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to find out how to prepare an iPhone for sale in 7 easy steps before you list your iPhone on the market.
- Back Up Your Personal Data
Before you wipe your iPhone clean, you need to make sure that your personal data is backed up. That way, you won’t lose anything of value and you can easily transfer all of this information to your new phone. You can back up your data using iCloud or iTunes.
Back Up Data with iCloud
Although iCloud is backing up your data on a regular basis, go ahead and perform a manual back up to make sure all of your bases are covered.
Make sure that you are connected to WiFi before opening your Settings app. Click on your name at the top of the screen and then the iCloud option. From there, you will see the iCloud Backup button and you want to select “Back Up Now.”
Back Up Data with iTunes
If your iCloud is full or you’re more comfortable using your computer, connect your iPhone to the computer you sync it with.
Open up your iTunes and look at the navigation panel on the left of the screen. You should see your iPhone under the Devices tab. Right-click to select your iPhone and select “Back Up” from the drop-down panel that appears.
- Sign Out of Your Accounts
Before selling your iPhone, you need to make sure that the device is logged out of your iCloud, iTunes, and App Store accounts.
Fortunately, you can take care of all three with one step. Open your settings app and click on your name at the top of the screen. Scroll down until you see the “Sign Out” button.
When you click to sign out, you will need to enter your Apple ID password. Then, select the “Turn Off” option.
- Turn Off Find My iPhone and Deregister iMessage
Without turning off the Find My iPhone setting, the new user will not be able to log in using their own information. The phone may even get flagged as stolen.
Open your Settings app, click on your name, and click on iCloud. From there, you’ll see the “Find My iPhone” option and you can tap the toggle to turn it off.

While you’re in your settings, go to Messages and tap the toggle next to iMessage so that iMessage is off.
- Erase Your Personal Data
Once you’re sure that your personal data is backed up through iCloud or iTunes, bring it to a full charge and prepare to wipe it clean.
Open the Settings app and select General. Scroll down to the bottom, where you’ll find the “Reset” option. Then, choose the “Erase All Contents and Settings” option.
While this step should take care of any third party accounts you’re signed into, it’s not a bad idea to go through and log out of everything. That includes any Google accounts, streaming services, and social media platforms.
- Unregister the iPhone
In order to remove the last link between this phone and your Apple account, go onto Apple’s website and log in using your Apple ID username and password.
Navigate to the account management page and look for your list of Apple devices. Locate the iPhone you’re planning to sell and click, “Remove from Account.”
- Remove the SIM Card
Unless you’re purchasing a new phone directly through your carrier, you will want to take the SIM card with you. The SIM card allows your phone to connect with the mobile data coming from your carrier’s towers.
On the right side of your phone, you’ll notice a small pinhole. Use a paper clip or other small object to push lightly into the pinhole until the SIM slot pops open. Then, remove the SIM card and store it in a safe place until you can put it in your new iPhone.
- Unlock the Phone from Your Carrier
If you want to sell your iPhone directly to an Apple user, you may want to try unlocking it from your carrier. This allows the user to set up the iPhone using just about any carrier of their choosing. To do so, you will need to contact your carrier directly and discuss the terms of your contract.
Note that if the contract period isn’t up, they may not allow you to take this step. In that case, make sure the buyer understands that they can only use the iPhone if they are using the same carrier as you.
